A Craft Cidery Is Moving into Milwaukee’s East Side

Calling all craft cider lovers! A new cidery called Pomona Cider is coming to Milwaukee’s East Side. The cidery will be the first in Milwaukee to produce craft cider made on-site.

Pomona’s business partners Bob Purman, Tom Gabert and Yannique Purman hope the cidery will be open this summer in time for the DNC Convention.

The cidery will be located on North Farwell Avenue in a building the business partners previously used for their film production business. The Purman’s chose to open the cidery in Milwaukee because of their hometown roots to the city and the direction they feel the East Side is heading.

Pomona will be the sister cidery of the partners Door County Cidery and Island Orchard Cider, which is open seasonally. Rather than extending the Island Orchard name into the new location, they chose to go with Pomona instead.

“The brand of Island Orchard Cider is focused on the community and landscape where it was established and we didn’t want to change that. Pomona, although still using the same base ingredients as Island Orchard Cider, will provide a new line of ciders” explains Gabert and Purman.

Although Pomona’s cider will only be available at their Milwaukee location, Island Orchard’s cider will be sold at Pomona.

The Purman’s inspiration behind Pomona’s name stems from its Latin origin, meaning “orchard fruit,” which pays tribute to their orchard on Washington Island where they grow their fruit. But that’s not all! The name was also influenced by the goddess of fruitful abundance in Roman mythology named Pomona.

“The name also fits the general aesthetic feel the cidery will provide,” says Gabert and Purman. “We don’t want to give away too much of the direction we are going with decor but we believe the name will make even more sense once you walk into our cidery!”
