Plans are proceeding for common area seating for outdoor dining, and just hanging out, on Milwaukee's east side.

The East Side Business Improvement District is creating carryout dining space for nearby restaurants on a sparsely used city-owned parking lot at 1915 E. North Ave.

Known as the East Side Art Lot, it will help support neighborhood restaurants that have been required to reduce their indoor seating capacity to help combat the coronavirus pandemic.

It also will encourage people to spend more time in the neighborhood by providing space to hang out.

The lot will be open from dawn to dusk starting on Friday, said Elizabeth Brodek, district executive director.

The district obtained a grant to buy 10 picnic tables, which this week are being painted by artists, to improve the empty lot.

The artists chosen by the district are Kimberly Burnett, Steph Davies & Eston Bennet, Taylor Fiester, Annah Horst, Byada Meredith, Rebecca Segal, Rozalia Singh, Cutesy Macabre, Melissa Steffes & Antoinette Jones and Lauren Zens.

The district is financed through assessments on neighborhood commercial property owners.
