Construction is beginning on "rapid implementation," paint-and-post protected bike lanes to calm traffic on North Avenue.

The East Side BID Board of Directors engaged two consulting firms to create a vision for North Avenue located east of the Milwaukee River.

Time will come when COVID-19 is behind us in Milwaukee. Whether that’s sooner or later, the psychological scars of more than a year of restricted social behaviors will remain. Milwaukeeans will return to restaurants, sporting events and concerts.

A parking structure that provides free spaces near a popular night life area on Milwaukee's east side is expanding its hours. The Prospect Medical Commons parking structure, 2311 N. Prospect Ave., has long made 65 spaces available from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. on weekdays, and from 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Commercial streets on the east side and other Milwaukee neighborhoods could close temporarily to create more outdoor dining space under a plan that won preliminary city approval Wednesday.

In the automobile age, conventional wisdom tied commercial development to streets dominated by cars — which bring people to office buildings, hotels, restaurants and shops. In recent years, the "Complete Streets" movement has argued streets should be reworked to better accommodate people who walk, bike and use mass transit.

The Clock Tower Building, 2266 N. Prospect Ave., at the corner of Prospect and North Avenues is most assuredly an East Side landmark, visible from all directions and across generations who have gazed up at its three faces to synchronize watches or make sure a meeting wasn't missed. Folks looking at it recently surely noted the absence of the minute and hour hands on all three clocks. The hands are now back.

Concrete barriers have been installed at the start and end of protected bicycle lanes on two bridges in Milwaukee. They're on the Locust Street and North Avenue bridges that link the city's east side with Riverwest.

Columbia St. Mary’s Medical Commons above ground parking ramp at 2311 N. Prospect Ave. now has 65 spaces available for public parking at specified times and days.

The six-story Art Deco Clock Tower Building on Prospect and North Avenues is a recognizable fixture on the East Side, much like the Oriental Theater built one year prior. But what is not visible to the average person is the variety of small businesses inside that call the building home.

The evolving art piece is simply known as The East Side’s signature bus shelter with adjoining business shelter on Oakland and North Avenue. It’s easy to miss now that it’s set against the backdrop of looming new development projects, most recently the new 4-story mixed-use building right across the street. Mini donuts are a staple on the corner, with the latest operator Chubby's Drive Thru adding patio seating.

The East Side Business Improvement District, in partnership with The City of Milwaukee has kicked off a retail market and planning study to guide retail recruitment/retention and future development of the East North Avenue area, with a special focus on the future of E. North Avenue from Oakland to the Milwaukee River. The East Side BID has hired CE Planning Studio of Milwaukee and Business Districts Inc. for this planning initiative.
