From an entertainment perspective, Milwaukee's East Side neighborhood celebrates iconic establishments while working to stay innovative with new business. It's not an easy line to walk, but new BID director David Smulyan is up for the journey.

Dogtopia, a national franchise of dog daycares, will be adding a location on Milwaukee’s East Side. The new dog daycare will go in the 6,400-square-foot commercial building located at 2219 N. Farwell Ave., near the southwest corner of Farwell and North avenues, according to permit applications filed with the city.

Just two years ago, longtime festival foods veteran Albert Yee was gearing up to take his Bubble Waffle Shoppes concept to the Super Bowl. But much has changed since then. In fact, since April, Yee’s world has been turned upside-down.

In February, Door County’s Island Orchard Cider announced it would open Pomona Cider Co. on Milwaukee’s East Side at 2163 N. Farwell Ave. The company said it had plans to renovate the 2,100-square-foot building into a tasting room that would also serve a limited array of craft beer and wine and would use a wood-fired oven to make appetizers, including flatbreads.

It’s called the East Side Art Lot. And it will breathe new life into the underutilized city-owned parking lot at 1915 E. North Ave., between Von Trier and Beans and Barley. “The East Side Art Lot will bring together our local community, local artists and local restaurants and shops that make the East Side so special.”

The East Side Business Improvement District (BID) is tackling this issue with its new initiative to create a space for restaurant patrons to go if outdoor seating is at capacity or simply if someone wants a quiet, outdoor space to relax. This space is called the East Side Art Lot and will be located at 1915 E. North Ave.

East Siders pitched the idea of using the city parking lot on East North Avenue between Von Trier and Beans & Barley as a place for additional outdoor dining space for area restaurants and now the idea is moving toward reality. On Wednesday, the East Side Business Improvement District (BID) officially announced the East Side Art Lot at 1915 E. North Ave.

The East Side BID announced Friday, June 19. The program would lower speed limits on stretches of E. North Avenue and N. Farwell Avenue from 30 mph to 25 mph. The program passed on Tuesday, June 16, with joint efforts from several City Departments and Business Improvement Districts, a release said.

In April, Brodek started the East Side On program to highlight local businesses along North Avenue and help them attract more patrons online. She partnered with the Experience Milwaukee Podcast to feature a different business every week, wrote a newsletter featuring Q&As with the owners, and organized online rally events on Facebook.

Commercial streets on the east side and other Milwaukee neighborhoods could close temporarily to create more outdoor dining space under a plan that won preliminary city approval Wednesday.

The Oriental Theatre is closing one of its two small screens for a few months, as part of Milwaukee Film's second phase of renovations at the east side movie palace. The theater's westernmost screen — the one closest to the theater's entrance at 2230 N. Farwell Ave. — will go dark after Sunday's showings, Milwaukee Film said Wednesday.

The Hacienda Beer Co. taproom will open Saturday at 2018 E. North Ave. The Door County-based brewery will open to the public at 11 a.m. with a diverse lineup of beers, from familiar juicy IPAs, mixed stouts and lagers to a new collection — a handful of funky and sour beers.

Since opening in December 2018, Crossroads Collective—a.k.a. one of the city’s first “food halls,” located in the former Oriental Drugs space on the East Side—has been great.

Saturday, Jan. 19 is the last day of operation for the Blick Art Supplies East Side shop, 2219 N. Farwell Ave. The Third Ward location across the street from MIAD, 242 E. Menomonee St., will remain open.

The former Yokohama space at 1932 E. Kenilworth Pl. will soon house Milwaukee's first Korean fried chicken wing joint.

The East Side Business Improvement District works to enhance the E. North Ave neighborhood's appeal to businesses and customers. Businesses like Beans & Barley, The Oriental Theater and Kashou Carpets thrive as traditional mainstays, and now we are pleased to welcome several new businesses to The East Side.

Columbia St. Mary’s Medical Commons above ground parking ramp at 2311 N. Prospect Ave. now has 65 spaces available for public parking at specified times and days.

Where can you find award-winning new developments? On The East Side, within just a few blocks of each other.

The six-story Art Deco Clock Tower Building on Prospect and North Avenues is a recognizable fixture on the East Side, much like the Oriental Theater built one year prior. But what is not visible to the average person is the variety of small businesses inside that call the building home.

Now is the time to grab one of the brand new East Side pads before someone else swoops in and steals your view. Where else can you ditch the car and have entertainment, lakefront/river trails and daily services all within view of your apartment? There is an energy to the East Side that cannot be matched anywhere else in Milwaukee, and you'll find that living right in the middle of it will invigorate you.

We’ve got something to add to your ‘art stops’ list but you won’t need to squeeze it into the packed schedule of Gallery Night/Day. In fact, you should visit when it’s raining. The evolving art piece is simply known as The East Side’s signature bus shelter with adjoining business shelter on Oakland and North Avenue. It’s easy to miss now that it’s set against the backdrop of looming new development projects, most recently the new 4-story mixed-use building right across the street. Mini donuts are a staple on the corner, with the latest operator Chubby's Drive Thru adding patio seating.

The East Side Business Improvement District, in partnership with The City of Milwaukee has kicked off a retail market and planning study to guide retail recruitment/retention and future development of the East North Avenue area, with a special focus on the future of E. North Avenue from Oakland to the Milwaukee River. The East Side BID has hired CE Planning Studio of Milwaukee and Business Districts Inc. for this planning initiative.

Three imaginative outdoor art pieces on North Ave and Cramer Street will serve as the gateway to the new East Library entrance. The artist was chosen by popular vote and happens to be both an Eastsider and an East Library user.
